Hungerford

We decided to take the children to Hungerford where there’s a really lovely walk by a canal (and the most awesome ice-cream shop). I siezed the opportunity to attach my new 70-200L f/4 IS lens and test it out. I also took out the trusty 24-20L f/2.8 (which has now been replaced by the 24-105L f/4 IS – you can see samples of that in my previous post, A Social Misfit (The Band, Not Me) ) and the Sigma 12-24mm.

Let’s have a look at how it did…

Btw… one of those images was NOT the 70-200. I hope you could tell WHICH one!

I think it performed quite well and produced pleasing results. There’s some nice, crisp images there but, to be fair, it was a glorious day so the real test will be in lower light. I’m looking forward to using this in force at my next wedding!

Have fun,

Garry

A Social Mistfit (the band, not me)

I popped out last night and managed to photograph our new local band A Social Misfit (https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/A-Social-Misfit/201521233220362) last night.

T’was an awesome gig and considering it was Adam and Kieron’s first EVER 4-piece appearance they rocked the Anton Arms totally. Al and Dave are just old hands (or was I meant to say hams) when it comes to gigs but they led the new guys perfectly. The only thing missing was a dry shirt at the end of the night – it was a sweaty, heat-fuelled, andrenaline-injected mass of noise and bodies!

Anyway, here are a few shots from last night’s gig.

 Have fun,

Garry.

Harris Hawk

I had the pleasure of photographing a Harris Hawk outside my own front door! A nieghbour is currently training his hawk to fly and was outside one evening a few weeks ago.

Strangely, I discovered he went to school with my wife (the trainer, not the bird!). While I was watching I grabbed my camera and took a few shots. Here is one of those shots…

Awesome looking bird. He was a bit scary though… he gave me a chance to hold the bird and it spent the whole 3 minutes intimidating me and screeching at me. I was glad to put him back! Never underestimate how scary a bird can be!

Garry

Grant Portrait

After being contacted by a family friend, I shot a 25th wedding anniversary portrait. They were a real tight-knit family and really responded quickly to my  requests for posing. They threw themselves into the shoot and enjoyed the day, as did I!

I captured some great portraits and even created a lovely montage of their youngest member for them.

Kelly & Jason’s wedding

I have finally managed to complete some of my jobs after suffering my bout of CSR. Things are mostly back to normal with just a slightly off-putting blur to my left eye.

First to be completed is Kelly & Jason’s wedding. Taken in Devon, this was a lovely day (as I was also a guest) and, I have to say, the first time I have ever taken a picture of a Bride with some sheep!

Kelly is such a fantastic person and I am so glad I know her. I met Jason on the day and I have to say he is the perfect match for Kelly. He is funny and cheeky and seems to enjoy life as much as Kelly does.

CSR update

So, I visited the eye hospital yesterday and was officially discharged! The vision is pretty much back to normal and I am working again. Fantastic! Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

This is good news for me as I have a large family portrait to shoot on Sunday and a wedding next Friday.

I’ve also just enrolled on the ‘I.C.E. Society’ website. Lots of tips and advice from one of the most accomplished Wedding photographers around – Jerry Ghionis. You’re never to clever to learn… that’s what I say!

Have fun,

Garry

Central Serous Retinopathy

So… the reason why it’s all been quiet on here? I have Central Serous Retinopathy. This is a temporary condition (so I have been told) that basically renders you pretty much blind in whichever eye it affects. Its main causes are stress (and it doesn’t always have to be high pressure stress – excessive exercise, hunger and lack of sleep are all contributing factors), being a “Type A” person (that is… Type A people are highly strung, impatient, fast-paced people and Type B people and relaxed, laid back and generally let things wash over them) and blood pressure (as I have and inherited high blood pressure I’m also in that category). Steroids and cortizone also aggrivate the condition (I’d recently had a steroid injection in my shoulder to aid a neck complaint). I have to now stay away from steroids and cortizone forever. On a side note… don’t hit 40 – you just crumble away!

It started as a little blip in my vision. As I was driving home I noticed that the white line on the side of the road had a little kink in it. I assumed it was my windscreen and thought nothing of it. A week later, as I was reading, I noticed that the words looked pinched around the same spot. Having visited the optician he advised me that I had something that looked like crinkly clingfilm on my left retina and sent me to an eye specialist. The eye specialist firstly said ”Oh… that looks interesting… I’ve never seen that before”!! After this she advised me that a) there was also one in my right eye and b) she would refer me to the Southampton Eye Clinic.

So, as I was waiting for an appointment, this blip suddenly progressed rapidly to such a state that I couldn’t see out of my left eye – it was like a large sunspot you get from staring directly into the sun. I spent most of the weekend talking to Southampton – all this time the spot was gaining in size. So I took myself into Southampton. They examined me, took some 3D scans of my retina and took some photos of the back of my eye (Nikon if anyone is interested!).

On examination of the results they confirmed Central Serous Retinopathy. It will recede. I may be left with mild anomalies in my eye. It may return. I can’t drive with it. When I close my right eye I can’t see anything of what I’ve just written. Damn… I can’t even watch my 3D TV because i have no 3D vision! All in all, not the best condition to have as a photographer but I’m comforted in the knowledge that it should be temporary. I just have to wait several months before I know what, if any, permanent damage it may cause.

Have fun,

Garry.

John Hanson Prom 2011

So, I attended the John Hanson Prom on Friday at the Barcelo Hotel, Basingstoke and it was a manic evening. Knee deep in children wanting portraits of their marvellous dresses and suits! It was pretty much a constant stream of young adults wanting pictures with their friends and dates. There were three parts to my shoot… firstly I captured the entrances (outdoor portraits). This involved just grabbing them as they left their cars/coaches/buses and posing them by their vehicles.

Then there was the hilight backdrop (studio portrait) set up in a small corner by the chocolate fountain (great place to put it!!). The only negative comment I have is that I didn’t get individual shots of every single person attending. This is something I will address on my next Prom shoot.

Finally there was photo journalistic coverage of the events in the hall itself. As I was manning the studio I was mostly unable to shoot the PJ content so I left that to my assistant shooter, occasionally dipping in to grab a few shots.

HP Heroes Presentation

I had the honour of capturing the presentation of service medals to two members of HP. They put their lives on the line to spend many months out on the front line, providing technical services to the military. The Rt Hon James Arbuthnot was in attendance to present them with their service medals and a bottle of Champagne. Well done lads!
